RABBI’S MESSAGE

Shalom:

During the Holy Day Season. we add a special psalm into our daily services.  Psalm 27 is recited from the first day of Elul until the end of Sukkot.  It is interesting that our sages selected this psalm.  In the middle there is the famous quote:

“One thing I ask of G-d, one thing I desire, to dwell in the house of G-d all the days of my life, to behold G-d's glory and to visit in G-d's palace.”

I believe that all of us have something important to learn from this verse.  We all know there are two types of Jews. There are those that are regular shul attendees. They go every week to shul. The shul is like their home.  They see the synagogue as G-d's house.  Then there are those who attend rarely.  They go to shul on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and stay away the rest of the year.  They view G-d's house as a palace

There is something that both types of Jews can learn from each other.  Those that attend all of the time should focus on how special the synagogue is.  They should learn to see G-d's house more like a palace.  They should realize how special their synagogue is.  Conversely, those that attend infrequently should strive to make the synagogue more like their home. They should try to be more comfortable in shul and make their synagogue their own.

It is interesting that the verse also stresses the common goal of both types of shul attendees.

“To behold the glory of G-d.”

Isn't that what it is all about?

I invite you to attend shul on a regular shabbat.  You too will behold the glory of G-d

Shana Tova,
Rabbi Chezi Zionce

SPONSORS NEEDED

One of the pleasures of Shabbat services is the social hour that follows. We sit down to enjoy a snack or meal, and in this relaxed, congenial atmosphere spend some quality time getting to know one another better. We should all take a turn or two sponsoring a Friday night Oneg Shabbat or a Saturday Kiddush Luncheon – the quality of which has made us justly famous! Why not celebrate a birthday or anniversary – or simply honor one or more of your hard-working co-congregants by contributing to the family feeling of Beth Tikvah? With a $100 contribution, you can sponsor an Oneg Shabbat; a Kiddush luncheon can be sponsored for $180. Call Arleen at 455-8811 to pick your date.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

&

On Monday October 27 at 7:30pm, we will discuss Tamara Yellin’s collection, Tales of the Ten Lost Tribes. Publishers Weekly writes: “In Yellin's 10 serenely crafted stories, the plight of the wandering Jew is manifested in various outsiders, adventurers or those who are simply restless and homesick. Each brief tale is named for one of Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, exiled in Assyria and scattered across the globe according to the Old Testament.” A handy way to purchase this just-released title is to visit our website, www.bethtikvahnaples.org and then click on the amazon.com link to order this or any other title or product.

Future book discussion meetings are planned for November 17 and December 15. Check our website for details.

TORAH DEDICATION CAMPAIGN

Our main fundraiser for the year just beginning is the Torah Dedication / Tree of Life Campaign that begins immediately and runs through the end of December.

When Beth Tikvah was in dire need of an additional Sefer Torah, Harvey Rosenthal’s request to the successor congregation of a Maryland synagogue he once served as president bore fruit. In years past, Harvey had been president of Temple Israel in Silver Spring, Maryland. With the usual shifts of the Jewish population over time, that synagogue merged with another, Beth Tikvah of Rockville, Maryland to become Tikvat Israel. Both synagogues were founded in the 1950s, and the merger occurred in 1997. This Sefer Torah, in a combined congregation with many others, fell out of use. Perhaps it is beshert that this Sefer Torah comes to us from a home with the same name in its history. Through Harvey’s initiative, and a modest donation, this Sefer Torah is reborn in Naples. We will have a dedication ceremony/celebration on February 8.  See insert for more info.
